Although they are known for their durability, many pet owners are nervous about having hardwood floors because of the toll that having pets can play on them. Are they right?
Durability of hardwood flooring
The good news is that floor treatments are an effective way to protect the hardwood underneath from scratches and dents caused by your pets. Look for a finish that includes cross-linkers, which provide a better bond and a tougher finish. Don’t stint on the coats, either; adding an extra layer will help ensure durability. Keeping your pet’s claws clipped and using rugs in heavy traffic areas will also help.
Consider pet accidents
If we’re talking pets, we must consider accidents. Urine is perhaps one of the most damaging things for a hardwood floor. Although modern coatings are designed to cope with accidents if they are cleaned up quickly, if urine sits on the floor it becomes more corrosive, eating through the varnish and damaging the wood underneath. Unfortunately, these kinds of stains can’t be bleached out, and even calling in a floor sanding company isn’t guaranteed to work as there is no way of telling how deep the damage goes. Cats, in particular, like to return to the scene of the crime – once they have marked the spot they are likely to urinate there again.
Hardwood floors are undoubtedly beautiful and durable, and provided they are well treated, the chances are good that any damage your pets do will be able to be sanded out. Preventing accidents, and clearing them up promptly should ensure the life of your floor. However, if all else fails, re-sanding is an option.
